Motor Planning and Speech: What parents need to know
Motor planning is a crucial part of learning and development for young children and it is something that we. as adults often take for granted. We don't have to consciously think when we are drinking from our coffee mug in the morning. Our sensory system and motor planning to execute such a task is on auto pilot. That is because of the many, many repetitions we have done with this task.
Toddlers, on the other hand, are still learning how to automate those processes. Once toddlers start walking and running, I think parents often start focusing on other areas of development figuring that the next level motor skills will come naturally. I have learned, however, that this is not the case for all kids. Some struggle with skills that might be overlooked by the untrained eye. Skills that provide the foundation for other important motor tasks including speech.
This week on my YouTube channel I provide an overview of what motor planning is as well as how it can affect development, learning and language development. In addition, I share some tips to help kids who may struggle with this area of development. You can watch it here.
